Been a week since I got my baby Daniellyn, me being the usual photowhore I am, already have (drumrolls) 110 pictures!! So the past week was crazy mad, school wise but I'm just so glad to be done with it all. All I'm left is one measly law paper and that's it. Plopped ourselves down at the new reservoir bistro yesterday after internet journalism submission (NO MORE IJ FOR LIFE) and got ourselves some well-deserved drinks.

Sat for a good 5hours from 6-11pm with good food and 2 jugs of beer and a jug of strawberry daiquiri yum. Almost an equivalent of 1 jug each hmm I rly do think my alcohol tolerance is improving slowly but surely.

But I learnt that the boys @edenbacon and @haroldhoodie make extremely great conversationalists when intoxicated, trust me they suddenly talk about life, happiness, goals and all which gave me a good surprise. Never knew these boys had it in them huhh.

What a good night with drinks, deep talks, great company, good food, sunset and the evening breeze. Oh lets just forget about the 160dollar bill though.

God, I know it's the last two weeks of work already but with all this work and all the deadlines, I can't seem to see the finish line. More than thinking to myself, yes i'll work like mad and get the 2 weeks over and done with, its unfortunately more strikingly similar to, ohgod ohgod two weeks but how do i finish all this in two weeks.....

And suddenly with April holiday plans really solidifying and materializing, it just came to my attention of the 'gap month' of March. What do I spend March doing? What a lovely Chinese New Year this year would be..... if only I didn't have so many assignments. But then again, I haven't started on them so it's barely affecting my holiday mood. I seem to have pushed the fact that I've a whole paper due next week to the deepest darkest corner at the back of my mind. But who cares, I'm happy!!!

I can't wait for reunion dinner tonight, oh just the thought of all the yummy peranakan food my mama is going to make is making my mouth water already... I'm going to be biased and say, I swear my mama is the. best. cook. everrrrrrrrrr.

Happy sunday, I'm going to watch Project Runway, have a mani/pedi, facial and read my new library books. Oh and shop online! I'm currently picking out my (hopefully) new wallet online and these are my favourite two right now.

Both, among other things (mainly Cover Girl cosmetics) are going into my shopping list which is to be passed to my dad to be brought halfway round the world to San Francisco in a couple days time!! It's like online shopping with my dad's credit card (+faster and free shipping), j-o-y.

Paris-Amsterdam 2011/12

Figured it about time I started on my Paris-Amsterdam adventures. Wow, to think that exactly a month ago I was to leave this warm humid island on this day... Feels like yesterday. Just saying, this is probably going to be the part 1 of 23781238 posts on Paris/Amsterdam because I've got wayyy too many pictures.

Landing - despite how much I love flying, the 12 hour flight proved to be way too much for me and my booty (or lack thereof)

First class check-in card! Which means no horribly long immigration checkpoint queues.

Arrived in lovely France at 8am just as the sun was rising.

Metro ticket! And yes, 10 euros comes up to 20sgd for one metro ride to the city. I shudder to think how much we've spent on transport alone.

And here's the thing about my family, we've never ever been on a tour. Never! We like to do things at our own pace and own time so we always go free and easy. My dad being somewhat familiar with all these countries is a plus point too but even if it's a completely new country like Spain or the small Italian towns, we still choose to roam the streets aimlessly with our trusty maps. That's kind of the charm of traveling, isn't it? Getting lost, exploring and hopefully finding a secret treasure somewhere which isn't in the maps.

Library books and my most recent nerdy purchase - the eighth installation of a series of short stories by local writers. I'm pretty excited to get started on it, it talks about journalism, writing and travelling, practically almost everything I love binded into a book. I do hope my expectations don't fall short. Really hoping to find some time to read these books amid my crazy hectic schedule of submissions and interviews. It's hard to force yourself to do work when my head is already too far ahead into March. Mini getaways - cool weather, roller coasters, girly sleepovers, gossip nights, beaches, lazing at a beach with a book and a cosmo. I hope everything comes to fruition in the end!!

New Year's Eve, I spent roaming the streets of Amsterdam, heading out for the flower market at the break of dawn and doing all the last minute shopping possible. Also included a major shopping spree in Monki, my new found love just along Kalverstraat.

12:00, midnight Singapore time aka 5pm in the city of vices, I was happily soaking (defrosting) in the tub with bath salts, my trusty first generation itouch, a strawberry lollipop and the Monki magazine. Totally oblivious I was to the commotion in my lovely sunny island.

12:00, midnight Amsterdam, I fell asleep just about one and a half hours before and my brother's definition of 'wake me up before 12, I want to countdown' was waking me up exactly at 11:59. Groggy eyed and sluggish I dragged myself out of the couch (yes I was sleeping on a couch but more of that later..) crawled to the window with my sony and counted down in my jammies and disheveled hair. Snapped a few shots of the fireworks before crawling back to the warmth of my couch and staring at the firework from there for a good 15minutes or so. Conclusion, I have a new found hatred, firecrackers.

As for the actual New Year Day? I spent it on a plane, joy. Then again, I hope it means endless miles of traveling for the year (and years) to come. But really, a 12 hour flight is not funny, especially when the in-flight entertainment doesn't have anything else to entertain you with and you're wide awake. It's a love hate relationship with that flying metal bird.

Date check, 3rd January. The only productive thing I've really done thus far is to pay my massive library fine of $18.70, kinda wanted to start the year on a clean slate... ha ha ha

I hope I have it in me to post all the pictures of my trip soon. I'm sure everyone spent NYE/NYD in a smashing way :) I hope give this little corner (which no one reads but I kinda like talking to myself) some kind of revamp soon. Till then x

The smelly smelly animal

I love horses. It's not something I would tell people the first time I meet them or anything but those who have known me for years would know. My obsession for that animal started in primary school, when I picked up Black Beauty. Thereafter, I read all the horse books I could find (Saddle club? Or something along those lines…) Then I moved on to horse encyclopedias, I begged and cried my parents to buy me one which still sits on my bookshelf. I bought all the horse merchandise I could see, figurines, posters.. heck, even glow in the dark horse stickers of which the sole surviving one is still stuck firmly on the mirror of my dressing table. Sometimes when I stare at it at night, I mistake it for a butterfly.

Now that I'm not as obsessed as I first was, it doesn't mean that I don't love them anymore. I still do. I surprise myself sometimes with horsey knowledge and facts I picked up when I was much younger. How a palomino is a golden-brown horse with black mane, how a horse is never ever white but always grey. How there are different types of bits for dressage, jumping and etc. And the thing is, I don't think the love will go away. Ever. I've always always dreamt of owning my own horse in the future. It would stay on this lovely piece of open land, with an apple tree. And when I put on the saddle, we would ride through the mountains, the rivers, the marsh, the fields. How lovely.

I went to the Philippines maybe 5 or 6 years ago and finally finally got the chance to ride a horse. I still remember that portion of my trip so clearly. They normally don't let beginners ride free reign but I got some leeway because we knew people who owned the horses. And that feeling, gosh. That feeling when you're on a galloping horse, the wind going through your hair, the exhilaration. It's indescribable. We trekked up to Malboro Country that day and that night, when my family was complaining about how the riding made their ass ache, I begged them non-stop to bring me back there again the next day for more.

How I long to be back on the saddle. I can't wait for that day to come again.

I really wanted to go horseback riding in Spain last year but sadly we didn't go to any beaches and winter isn't exactly the most appropriate time to do so :(

Speaking of happy occasions, Christmas is coming in just slightly more than a week. My favourite time of the year, I love the carols, the lights, the christmas tree and its decorations, the lovely food, the presents, the happiness, the joy all around when the time of the year creeps around the corner.

I'm still a bit bitter over the fact that for the first time ever in my life, I won't be celebrating Christmas in my dear Singapore. I hope Paris treats me well x. But nonetheless the Gan family doesn't scrimp on Christmas decorations (or presents!) Though truth to be told, the house does seem slightly less festive this year, maybe it's because we're not really bothered about packing and cleaning up the house or thinking of the perfect menu or scrambling to fill our tree with presents for our annual christmas party anymore.

But sometimes, when you get really lucky and you make the effort, you find a friend who is both, the first and the second.

Gifts and presents

I think a book is a perfect gift.

Especially if the receiver enjoys reading that is. It's like giving them a companion. A new best friend, one at your disposal whenever you need one. One that can take your mind off things for a bit. One that brings you into a whole new world to distract you from your own. This new friend is there for you rain or shine, night or day. This new friend will bring you laughs, smiles and maybe sometimes tears.

It's like saying, "Here, have a portable friend so you won't be so lonely. Have a distraction, so you won't overthink. Here, have a happy ending." Even if it's only for a short while.

I think I've reached this point of maturity or is it contentment? Or acceptance?
Whatever it is, I think I've reached this point whereby I feel so genuinely happy for other people. No fake 'congratulations' or 'yay's but true raw happiness for someone else. And it's all in return, making me a very happy girl. I'm home on a Friday night, no where near completing my assignments, way behind in my schedule and work and studies for the upcoming tests. But I'm happy, really happy. Happy for the other people who are happy, happy with myself for being happy for them. And I confusing you yet? Bottomline is, I hope this happiness and mindset lasts. And I hope you're happy too :)

Last friday night

Last night turned out to one of my best decisions of the month (ok, past few weeks). My initial plans of staying in to complete more articles and attempt to start on Magazine Editing was shelved for... Butter Fact's guestlist! (I'm such a horrible student btw)

One of my best night outs ever. Got table courtesy of Mr Louis & Fiona Guo, complete with a bouquet of flowers *ahem ahem*, a tower of beer (yum), champagne and coffee liquor shots. Pew pew pew, clubbing with my two fav girls really reminds of our old times. Back then all my clubbing experiences revolved around these two girls, rebel zirca butter zouk powerhouse, 3 young crazy girls conquered them all together. Just got remembered of those nights and that one time when 3 shrank to 2, when Fiona & I decided to go on our own just two of us. How I ended up in the handicapped toilet puking my guts out, unable to text, plastic bag around my ear in a cab (ohgod hahaha) and sprawled on her kitchen floor. Oh those absolutely hilarious and dear memories, I'll keep forever in my heart. Aye what would I do without you two?

Our $4 night really turned out one of the best. Rounded it up with a ride home from my favourite driver, hitting 160km/h on the highway with my head stuck out, 2 blabbering screaming shouting noisy high girls in the backseat oh and the oily crispy prata supper I whined for. Bliss.

Just when I woke up feeling increasingly guilty for not starting on my school work, I read the entry I posted about 2/3 posts behind and thanked god for my slightly reckless impromptu decision. I was honestly getting so buried under the stress of school and having to perform well that I was becoming this shell. So much so that all my friends tell me that I have this perpetually worried and tired face on 24/7, which is no surprise considering the fact that school has been always constantly on my mind the past few weeks.

Thank god for the time out, just needed to feel a bit more like myself again and not that lifeless tired shell I was becoming.

No.

We will look back at the memories we made, laugh at them, remembering the good old times, childhood summers, first loves, true loves.

And we will look back old and dying and only regret the things we failed to do. Working late and not being there for our child’s big moments. Not taking that trip to Europe. Not asking that big question. Not taking risks. Not colouring outside the lines.
It’s the memories that matter. Not the merits. Go out there and live. Live a life you will want to look back on. Do crazy things. Risk it all. Love like there is no tomorrow. The possibilities are limitless.

Does anyone seem to remember this song? I'm pretty sure it's a kind of nursery rhyme and that I used to sing it when I was younger. Though somehow it seems that no one around seems to know of this rhyme... Can't find it on youtube either but I am so so so sure it exists.

I know it's random but I used a part of it for my story title (Sing your way home) and I can't get the tune out of my head. Feeling extremely nostalgic right now, I love nursery rhymes. Why grow up?

Ack week 2 of school starts tomorrow and I'll be faced with writing writing and writing non-stop. Woes of a Journalism major.

Plus I'm feeling very inadequate right now. I haven't been writing since... a year ago for Basic Sub-Editing. And while my other peers have had journalism experience for the past 6 months.. I didn't. I'm not sure if I can jump back in just like that. Basically feeling extremely uninspired and unmotivated right now so I'm hoping my trip to the library to face mountains of books will help start up my rusty engine a little.

First day of school today and boy am I drained... I mean it's just the first day and I'm SWAMPED.

24 hours later (or maybe even slightly less than that), I'm kinda done with my SIP report! So hey, to all those who called me mad or crazy for starting so late. In. Your. Face. I'm kidding, anyway all that's left is to edit it and smooth out the edges. Oh and I'm even a page over the limit... got to cut down on that.

So while I was writing this report, I actually found it a breeze for me as I had so much material to work with. The words I found myself unknowingly repeating so often was 'Grateful'. And I really am. I'm so grateful to my host company for giving me so much opportunities and chances to do so many things over my 6 months. I didn't even mention every single the thing I did in my report! (Just the selective few) I've done a screening, press event, facebook stunt, office auctions and so much more. While my job was primarily supposed to be dealing mostly with PR I even got the chance to dabble in Social Media Communications.

I guess while I was there during the 6 months, I never really thought about how lucky I was... now looking back, I really am oh so so soooo grateful. So much so that I'm finding myself enjoying writing the SIP report and really missing the office.... Is it a sign that maybe just perhaps Journalism isn't really for me? Communications? PR? Really?

Then I will head over to harbourfront for some high-tea with my momsy, followed by All Time Low with Navs & Dora. I'm proud of say for once that I was right. Things did get a lot better and my Thursday seems close to perfect.

All of them are gone and out of the 4, I'm the last man standing. Not for long though, I've got to pull through 2.5 more weeks and there I go. I think despite my complaints and endless whining about said internship, I did manage to learn and gain a whole lot through this 6 months. Wouldn't trade it for the world. I was very very lucky to have met a wonderful group of friends whom we've made countless memories together through the short 3/5months. Our outings, times we skipped work together, 3 hour lunch breaks, Storeroom naps and heart to heart chats. However, nearing the end, you could tell something changed. We all knew very well that those 3 months were the first and the last time the 4 of us would ever hang out together again, all we had was just that one summer.

I know the chances of all four of us meeting together and hanging out again is extremely slim. If it never happens again, I'll remember the Summer of 2011 forever, but till then I'd still like to hang on to a sliver of hope that just maybe somehow somewhere I'll see our tiny group reunite. So till then, stay safe & be happy my friends, I hope Hong Kong treats you well x

I still remember the night it happened, the tension in my house. My dad was on a flight bound for the US. Imagine how eerily quiet my house was, all of us glued in front of the television watching the news for any sort of information. Millions of scenarios and thoughts filled our heads but imagine our relief when we knew it wasn't my dad's plane.

"The deaths of adults who were killed in the attacks or died in rescue operations resulted in over 3000 children losing a parent."

But not everyone is so lucky.
I got my dad back within in week, but not everyone else did.
9/11, 10 years on and it still haunts. RIP.

Was National Day yesterday!! Figured that everywhere would be crowded so we thought for really long thinking of somewhere to go to beat the crowd. Not a big fan of squeezing and all you see.

Decided to go to Labrador Park!!

LOOK! Really really really pretty sunset. I think Labrador Park has climbed it's way up to being one of the prettiest parks in Singapore in my heart. Plus we DID manage to beat the crowds, the park was pretty empty!!

And kinda got to be part of the parade, saw the helicopters! Had a nice dinner at the seafood restaurant nearby, I'm still drooling for the sambal. Love it when we unknowingly stumble into new and nice places! Totally unintentional but we really found a hidden gem hehehehe.

I think I've been overworking this puny brain of mine recently thiking wondering worrying not so much about the present but the future. how events can shape decisions how minor decisions contribute to where you are right now. I looked at Singapore from the infinity pool last week, I see the skyline the highways the bright lights the life the music how the city never really sleeps and I don't even know if I want it anymore. At this moment I'd gladly throw technology and everything away to stay in a clean simple house in the countryside and I'm not even kidding I've been honestly and very seriously considering this thought in the future (hopefully) But then again, things might change, I might change, nothing is constant what I'm feeling now might just turn out to be just a small fantasy when I look back.

I fell asleep to the therapeutic pitter patter of the rain last night and woke up to amazing weather as well as mini cream puffs, flown in straight from Japan by my dad for breakfast. Right now I've got a warm cup of milo in my hands as I run my itunes and read the newspapers.

It's a beautiful day and I'm so lucky to be alive. I'm so lucky to have had 19 great years surrounded by the best company I could ever ask for.

you know sometimes I just get a sudden flood of memories when I'm just sitting on the mrt to work.

I suddenly remember moments where we were laughing.

I don't remember what made it so funny or why we were laughing so much in the first place

but i remember that we laughed while clenching our stomachs gasping for air and wiping tears out of eyes.

good times.

I wrote this some time back when I reached the office and recently dug it up once again when I was clearing up my desktop. Speaking of which, I've had another memory just recently, I don't know how or why, it just suddenly hit me.

Back when I was in Secondary 4, Woo & I had e-math tuition together every week (Saturday afternoon if memory doesn't fail me) and for a period of time, after every tuition session, we would walk and buy a huge take-away of sambal stingray + a 1.5litre bottle of water and devour it under a random void deck across the road. Got me craving for the juicy stingray drizzled with yummy chilli and of course the times that have past.

Maybe I'm getting nostalgic cause I'm getting olddddddddddddddddddd
